Project Overview

Farm Credit Canada (FCC) is a federal Crown corporation and the leading financial services provider for Canada’s agriculture and agri-food sector. As the industry it serves becomes more data-intensive, FCC launched a major strategic initiative to modernize its enterprise data architecture and shift to cloud-native operations on AWS.

The migration was about more than infrastructure. FCC wanted to unlock stronger analytics, automate manual work, enable cross-functional reporting, and lay the groundwork for AI-powered forecasting. To get there, legacy ETL processes built for on-premises systems had to be re-engineered, workloads had to move to the cloud without disrupting operations, and governance had to scale across business units.

Bronson was engaged across two separate contracts to provide senior data engineering expertise on FCC’s broader data transformation program. The role was hands-on and embedded: working alongside FCC’s internal data teams to translate cloud migration goals into working pipelines, governance practices, and reporting solutions, while keeping a steady focus on long-term maintainability.

The Challenge

FCC’s data environment had to keep running while it was being rebuilt. That created a series of technical and organizational challenges that needed senior expertise to navigate.

The main challenges Bronson tackled:

  • Legacy ETL on borrowed time. Existing pipelines were built for on-premises systems and could not be lifted directly into a cloud-native architecture without significant redesign.
  • Migration without downtime. Workloads had to move to AWS while maintaining operational continuity and the integrity of data flowing into business-critical processes.
  • Governance at scale. Data quality, traceability, and monitoring practices had to extend across multiple business units and data sources, not just one team or one pipeline.
  • Bridging legacy and cloud. Some systems would remain in place during the transition, so the new architecture had to play well with legacy sources while still being cloud-optimized.
  • Self-service expectations. Business users wanted faster, cleaner access to data, which meant the modern stack had to support real-time reporting, not just back-end engineering wins.

FCC needed senior hands-on engineering. FCC needed governance that could scale. And FCC needed solutions that were modular enough for its internal teams to extend long after the engagement ended.

Our Solution

Bronson embedded a senior data engineering consultant with FCC’s internal data teams and business stakeholders. The work was iterative and collaborative, with each pipeline, framework, and dashboard tied directly to a business outcome and documented for long-term ownership by FCC.

The engagement was organized into five integrated workstreams:

1. Cloud-Native ETL Design and Automation

Bronson designed and built ETL pipelines using AWS Glue, Python, PySpark, and SQL to handle high-volume, high-integrity data transformation. Pipelines were modular and reusable so FCC could extend them across business domains.

2. AWS Cloud Integration

Using AWS Redshift, Lambda, and Glue, Bronson orchestrated the migration of enterprise data sources into the cloud environment, with attention to performance, cost, and operational continuity during cutover.
