Quick Summary
Bronson delivered the complete 2024 ENERGY STAR Canada Annual Report for the energy efficiency program’s lead organization, continuing a relationship spanning three previous editions.
Content was gathered, reviewed, and finalized across four program divisions: ENERGY STAR for Products, for New Homes, for Buildings, and for Industry.
Two production-ready report versions were delivered: a fully designed layout version and a stripped-down simplified Word version built for web publishing and accessibility compliance.
25 standalone visual asset files were produced, each with accessibility-compliant alternative text, covering charts, graphs, images, logos, and textboxes.
Content development followed a structured three-draft iterative process anchored by a formal kickoff and supported by structured program reporting templates.
Project Overview
ENERGY STAR Canada is one of the country’s most recognized energy efficiency programs, operating across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors to help Canadians identify and choose certified energy-efficient products, homes, and buildings. Each year the program produces a public-facing Annual Report documenting results, program highlights, and sector-level impact across its four operating divisions.
Bronson was engaged to produce the 2024 edition of this report, the first deliverable under a new multi-year service agreement and the fourth consecutive Annual Report Bronson has developed for the program. The engagement required close coordination with four program teams and the energy efficiency program lead project authorities, moving from structured template design and stakeholder kickoff through three iterative drafting cycles to final dual-format delivery.
The 2024 report carried an added layer of complexity: for the first time, the program required a simplified accessibility-compliant version of the report in addition to the traditional designed layout version. This dual-format requirement introduced a new production workstream that needed to be built and delivered without disrupting the primary report development timeline.
The Challenge
Producing a polished, multi-division program report on a firm delivery schedule, while simultaneously introducing a new accessibility-compliant format for the first time, required careful editorial management and production planning.
- Multi-division content coordination. Four program divisions, each with distinct data, metrics, and narratives, needed to contribute content on a common schedule and to a consistent standard. Without structured intake tools and a clear kickoff, fragmented or late submissions risked compressing the drafting and review timeline.
- Consistency across a multi-year series. As the fourth consecutive edition, the 2024 report carried reader expectations around visual style, tone, and structure. The content needed to feel fresh and reflective of the 2024 program story while maintaining continuity with the established look and feel of prior editions.
- Accuracy across technical program metrics. Energy certification figures, product category data, and program participation numbers require careful verification. Errors in a public-facing program report carry reputational risk, making review cycles critical rather than optional.
- Engaging presentation within a formal reporting structure. Annual reports risk reading as compliance documents. Developing supplementary elements, including “Did You Know” textboxes, “Fun Fact” callouts, charts, and program imagery, required editorial judgment to add accessibility and visual interest without undermining the report’s credibility.
- First-ever simplified accessible format. The requirement to produce a simplified Word version with all visual elements removed and replaced by placeholder comments introduced a new production workstream with no prior template to draw from. Each of the 25 visual asset files also required accurate alternative text, adding a layer of effort that had not existed in previous editions.
- Web publishing workflow integration. The simplified version needed to be structured specifically to support the internal web communications team’s publishing process, meaning the format choices made during production had direct downstream implications for how the report would appear on the program’s public website.
The program needed a content development partner capable of managing the full editorial arc, from research and stakeholder facilitation through content development, visual production, and dual-format delivery, on a fixed schedule.
Our Solution
Bronson structured the engagement as a sequential editorial and production process, moving from background research and template design through stakeholder alignment, iterative drafting, visual asset production, and dual-format delivery.
1. Background Research and Benchmarking
Bronson reviewed the three prior ENERGY STAR Canada Annual Reports, the program website, relevant departmental planning documents, and recent public opinion research to establish the editorial approach for the 2024 edition and to inform the design of program reporting templates. This research grounded both content framing decisions and the structure of the intake templates distributed to program divisions.
2. Program Reporting Template Design
Bronson developed structured reporting templates for each of the four ENERGY STAR program divisions, standardizing the format, level of detail, and content requirements for submissions. These templates reduced ambiguity for program staff and improved the quality and consistency of incoming content ahead of the drafting phase.
3. Stakeholder Kickoff Facilitation
Bronson facilitated a project kickoff with program stakeholders to align on roles, contribution timelines, the three-draft development process, and the dual-format delivery structure. This session established shared expectations across all four divisions and the project authority before any drafting began.
4. Iterative Content Development
Bronson developed report content across three structured drafts, reviewing and refining program submissions at each stage, incorporating feedback from division leads and program leadership, and maintaining accuracy and editorial consistency throughout. The three-draft structure gave the program authority regular checkpoints to course-correct without compressing the final review period.
5. Visual Asset Production
Bronson produced all accompanying visual content, including charts, graphs, images, logos, “Did You Know” textboxes, and “Fun Fact” callouts, designed to enhance the readability and visual appeal of the report. All 25 visual assets were delivered as standalone Word documents with accessibility-compliant alternative text descriptions, meeting departmental standards for accessible digital content.
6. Layout Version Production
Bronson assembled the fully designed layout version of the 2024 Annual Report, presenting all content, including the cover page, table of contents, program text, charts, images, logos, and textboxes, in final formatted layout as it would appear when published as a PDF. This version represented Bronson’s complete production vision for the report.
7. Simplified Accessible Version Production
Bronson produced the simplified Word version of the report, retaining the cover page, table of contents, section headings, and program text while removing all visual elements and replacing them with descriptive placeholder comments. This version, the first of its kind for the program, was designed specifically for ingestion by the internal web communications team and to satisfy departmental accessibility requirements for online publication.

The Impact
Bronson’s engagement produced a complete, professionally designed, and accessibility-compliant Annual Report on schedule, meeting both the program’s public communications objectives and its internal web publishing requirements.
- The program received two fully production-ready report formats simultaneously, each tailored to a distinct end use, with no requirement for the internal team to manage format conversion or reformatting after delivery.
- The first-ever simplified accessible version gave the web communications team a clean, structured document for online publication, directly reducing the internal effort required to post the report and ensuring compliance with departmental accessibility standards from the outset.
- The 25 individually packaged visual asset files with alternative text removed a significant accessibility gap that had existed in prior editions, giving the program a replicable production model for future reports.
- The structured three-draft process kept all four program divisions aligned and on schedule, reducing the coordination burden on the energy efficiency program lead project authorities and avoiding the last-minute content scrambles that multi-division reports often encounter.
- Continuity with prior editions was maintained throughout, preserving the report’s established visual identity while introducing fresh editorial treatments appropriate to the 2024 program narrative.
- The engagement extended Bronson’s record as the ENERGY STAR Canada Annual Report’s production partner across four consecutive editions, demonstrating the value of sustained editorial relationships on recurring communications programs.
The engagement reflects Bronson’s capacity to manage the full lifecycle of a complex, multi-stakeholder communications project, from research and template design through editorial development, visual production, and accessibility-compliant delivery. By building the simplified version and its 25 accompanying asset files in parallel with the primary layout report, Bronson gave the program a durable, standards-compliant production model that can serve as the template for future editions.
